Algonquin Park winter birds

Back in February on the Family Day long weekend, Bill and I headed up to Algonquin Provincial Park.  We had our sights on hopefully finding some red crossbills, and white-winged crossbills while there.  Last February, we had no luck as we saw  a few but they were on the tree tops, which was not good for pictures.  This year we had luck. Not only did we see both crossbills, we saw a few other species. Unfortunately, we saw a male pine grosbeak, but he was so high in the trees, we were unable to get a picture.

Here are some of our favourites.  (click each picture to give you a larger view).

I hope you enjoyed the photos.

Thanks for stopping by.  I'll be back later in the week with a couple of Easter cards to share.
Have a wonderful day!

If you and Bill had set stuffed birds up in a studio and carefully arranged the settings you couldn't have gotten better pictures than these. I'm stunned every time. Take the Spruce Grouse, for instance. It's as though you thought "this picture needs something" and slipped that little cone into the composition. And that's just one little smidgen of the awesomeness of these photos. The snow falling against the green with the Red Crossbill... the pure white with the Gray Jay. The last two Red Crossbill photos, female and male, just blow me away with their warmth and beauty. Each photo is an award winner. How can you ever put these away? Literally breathtaking!

Oh my gosh! These are so beautiful. God really made some beautiful birds. Had to laugh at the "red eyebrows" on the grouse. Such gorgeous colors.
